3rd International Workshop on Global Change:
Connection to the Arctic 2002 (GCCA3)
The
Arctic affects the global climate through strong feedback processes in the
system, consisting of the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere and
thermo-/ionosphere, oceans with sea ice, and land with climatic effects of
tectonic activities. Previously, two workshops were held at Sendai, Japan, in
2000 and at Sapporo, Japan, in 2001. Through these workshops, crucial research
topics were identified and the importance of integration efforts was
recognized.
The
International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
(UAF) was established jointly by the governments of Japan and the United States
in order to study Arctic climate change/global warming, and to predict future
changes. It is an ideal location for this workshop, bringing together both
Japanese and US scientists for the purpose of formulating joint projects in
advancing our knowledge of the climate in the Arctic. The focus of this
workshop is to integrate understanding of the role of the Arctic in global
climate change. The goal of this
workshop is to formulate joint research projects between Japanese researchers
and US/UAF researchers and to plan for their concrete executions.

All
Japanese research projects at the International Arctic Research Center (IARC)
must be situated as international collaborations with the U.S.A., desirably,
and other Arctic nations. As
described on the attached figures, newly proposed Japan Arctic Monitoring and
Process Study (JAMP) is a joint work with preceding Community Arctic Modeling
Project (CAMP), Frontier, and IARC-National Space Development Agency of Japan
Information System (INIS) programs at the IARC. The collaborations between JAMP and other
IARC projects would be good opportunities for researchers of Japan, U.S.A. and
other Arctic nations for observational process studies of global warming. It would be essential for Japanese and
U.S. researchers to propose new research plans, with the IARC research themes
in mind, to both nationsf funding agencies.
Objectives
of this workshop are to coordinate and to improve individual research plan
through multidisciplinary discussions. Researchers who are interested in this
workshop will be requested to contact initial coordinators listed in GCCA3
circular or other relevant research field to prepare the draft. Each group should choose a principal
investigator (PI) at early stage of draft forming. The PI leads discussions and coordinate
to prepare a tentative research plan for the workshop using the research
planning form.
During
a workshop, each group presents its own plan and discusses with others based on
the planning forms. In this
process, a plan may be transformed or merged with the other plan.
Improved
research plans will be concluded at the end of workshop. The improved plans will be proposed to research
funds of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and
National Science Foundation.
For
the non-funded participants, IARC/NSF will provide accommodation. IARC/NSF will also provide
transportation between UAF and Chena Hot Spring Resort. No registration fees are required.
