The Conference will take place on the second floor of: The Hamanako Royal Hotel Yamazaki 4396-1, Yuto-cho, Hamana-gun Shizuoka-ken 431-01, Japan (tel. +81-53-592-2222; fax +81-53-592-5522)where most of the attendants will stay. Lake Hamana, the tenth largest lake in Japan (65.0 km2, cir. 114 km), is one of the premiere resort areas of Japan.
Average temperatures in March range from a high of 14¡ C to a low of 5¡ C. March weather can at times be unpredictable, just like substorm activity. Although weather conditions in the area during March are generally favorable, there are often winds from the Pacific Ocean and the lake, making it advisable to bring a jacket for evenings.
Four tutorial talks will also be presented, covering a wide area of substorm physics. There will be two poster-viewing/discussion periods: Poster Presentation 1 (Sessions 1 and 2) and Poster Presentation 2 (Sessions 3, 4, 5, and 6), which will take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, respectively, although we strongly encourage the display of all posters for the entire week. The poster room will be next to the room where the oral sessions will be presented.Scientific Sessions
There will be a total of six scientific sessions, both with oral and poster presentations. Their titles are listed in the following: 1. What are the major expansion phase actions as seen at various regions? 2. What triggers substorm expansion onset? 3. What are the roles of waves and microscopic processes in large-scale substorm processes? 4. What is the relationship between global convection and substorm expansion? 5. What is the role of the inner magnetosphere during substorms? 6. General contributions which do not fit exclusively to any of the above five subjects - poster presentations only.
In the Conference Room, two viewgraph projectors, one slide projector, and two screens will be available as the standard equipment. Please contact LOC (ics4@stelab.nagoya-u.ac.jp) in advance if you plan to use other tools such as a video projector. The Conference Room is strictly "No Smoking." Smoking is permitted only in a designated area on the second floor of the Hotel.
The size of the board for poster presentations is 100 cm x 150 cm. Please plan your exhibit to fit this space. Tape and scissors will be available in the poster session area. Refreshments are provided in the poster presentation room so that the room may be used as a place for informal discussions.
A copy machine and transparencies for the viewgraph projector will also be available in the Conference Room for last-minute final touches on your paper, as well as for mass producing materials for your presentation. These services are free (but may depend on how massive your mass is).
Page limit: 6 pages invited papers 4 pages contributed papers Reprints: US $30.00 per page (including shipping) per 100 units Color page charges: US $1,000.00 per page Each principal author will receive one free copy of the Conference Proceedings.
Accommodations (The Hamanako Royal Hotel): The room rate is 14,000 yen per night per person for a twin, and 17,000 yen per night for a single. This special rate for Conference participants and accompanying guests includes breakfast and dinner and a 10% service charge, not including a small tax. The hotel reservation form can be found in the third circular for the Conference or can be obtained from the LOC. Payment by credit card is encouraged.
Conference-related social events are: A welcoming cocktail party on Monday evening; A half-day excursion to scenic places on Wednesday afternoon; and A banquet on Thursday evening.
Social Events
You have two choices, Plan A and Plan B, for the excursion. Please notify your choice at the reception desk near the entrance of the Conference Room by Monday evening.
Plan A - Close-up view of Mt. Fuji: At the end of the morning session, busses will leave Lake Hamana at noon and travel to Shiraito Falls. A Japanese-style lunch box (bento) will be served on the bus. The waters flowing over the falls come mainly from an underground current which is directly connected to Mt. Fuji. Afterwards, the busses will travel to Lake Motosu. On the way to the lake, you may enjoy a close-up view of Mt. Fuji from the surrounding foothills (weather permitting). Lake Motosu was created by an ancient eruption of Mt. Fuji in which previously free-flowing water was dammed off by lava from the eruption. You can still see solid lava on the lake shore. Dinner will be served aboard a cruise ship in Shimizu harbor together with the Plan B members. Souvenirs will be available at Shiraito Falls and Lake Motosu.
Plan B - Distant view of Mt. Fuji: After lunch at the Hotel, busses will leave Lake Hamana at 13:30 and travel to Nihondaira where you may enjoy a distant view of Mt. Fuji (weather permitting). Nihondaira is connected to Kuno-zan Toshogu by a ropeway. Mixed Buddhist and Shinto-style buildings were built in Toshogu in 1617 in honor of the deified spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the greatest Shogun in the history of Japan. Afterwards, the busses will travel to Miho no Matsubara, located on the Pacific Ocean shore. You may again see Mt. Fuji beyond the pine tree woods (Matsubara). Dinner will be served aboard a cruise ship in Shimizu harbor near Miho no Matsubara where you will join members of Plan A. Souvenirs will be available at Nihondaira, Toshogu, and Miho no Matsubara.
Depending on demand, we will arrange day tours of various sites around Lake Hamana (including lunch cruises or strawberry picking), local temples, the Yamaha piano factory, the Ryugashi caves, the Irago Peninsula (flower farms and quiet beaches), and a Japanese department store in the nearby city of Hamamatsu. Please obtain more detailed information at the reception desk and sign up there if you have decided to join the family plan.
There are quite a number of different ways to reach the conference/accommodations site from each of the airports. "Maisaka" is the JR (Japan Railways) train station closest to the site (10 min. by taxi; 1,200-1,500 yen). One taxi can carry 3-5 people, depending on the size. Tipping is not necessary in Japan. Please note that Maisaka Eki (train station) is on the local train line. The Shin-kansen (high-speed or Bullet Train) does not stop at Maisaka Eki. If you plan to use the Shin-kansen, change trains as directed below. We recommend the following sample routes:
