Global Vlasov simulation of weakly-magnetized small body

Global Vlasov simulation of weakly-magnetized small body performed on the K computer is in progress. The massively-parallel computation has been performed in about one year from the preliminary result in Feb. 2013.

The color shows the ion density and the cyan and purple lines show magnetic field lines and the surface of the body, respectively.

The solar wind plasma is injected from the left boundary. A high-density region is formed at the dayside (left-hand side of the body) magnetopause, and a bow shock is also formed. A low-density wake region is formed in the nightside (right-hand size) of the body, and the wake tail expands anti-sunward.
